Student Food Co-operative
Welcome to Scoop!
We hold pop up shops every Tuesday between 12pm and 2pm in Portland, where you can get your hands on delicious, ethical, reasonably priced food!
Who are you?
We are the University of Nottingham student food cooperative.
What exactly is that?
Our aim is simply to make sustainably sourced food available to everyone across campus at reasonable prices, and in doing so, raising awareness for healthy eating and ethical living.
We are a cooperative, so every member has an equal say, committee members or not. If you have an idea, make it happen! It's great for getting involved in because everyone works together equally.
Big supermarkets make a fortune off charging whatever they want for food of varying quality and questionable morals, so we’re bypassing them by ordering food directly from wholesalers; food that is organic, Fairtrade, or sustainably sourced. Everyone in the supply chain, from farm to plate, is paid fairly, as it should be. We then sell it to you at no profit to ourselves, giving you food at wholesale prices.
This works out as cheap as shopping in a supermarket, with the added bonus of the knowledge that you are helping to improve the global food chain by avoiding food that exploits people and the environment.
What can I do?
You can volunteer with us! We are a brand new group as of this year, so we need all the help we can to get up and running.
There’s a variety of opportunities on offer:
- Running weekly pop up shops selling food in the students union
- Weighing out, bagging up and labelling items for sale
- Stock taking, food ordering, and finances
- Publicity: advertising what we do to everyone on campus!
Since we’re brand new this year, there’s a lot of room for helping to shape and develop this group to help it grow into an invaluable service here at Nottingham.
What’s in it for me?
You’ll gain experience from whatever you decide to do which would look brilliant on a CV, you’ll make some really good friends, and you’ll know that you’re doing your bit to help provide an alternative to the currently exploitative food industry.
Also, if you find yourself often on Sutton Bonnington Campus, check out the SB SCoop!
