Diabetes Support Group
Hi. We are the Type 1 Diabetics at the University of Nottingham.
The University of Nottingham Type One Diabetes Support Group was set up in 2013 for young adults living with T1D in Nottingham. Our aim is to provide a support network for students away from home - while helping to raise awareness about Diabetes and it's symptoms.
Type 1 Diabetes is a complicated and taxing illness to maintain and (while we all strive to maintain a normal, healthy lifestyle) sometimes we need to hear from others who understand what it means to feel a hypo! Our group is a way for diabetics to connect and share their experiences with others.
We provide information about juggling a life at university and maintaining blood glucose levels. We run events to raise awareness of the symptoms of Diabetes. We fundraise for Type 1 research.
Established only in September 2013, we have achieved a great amount in a short period of time. Over 2014, some of the events we ran include:
• Raising over £100 in our World Diabetes Day bake sale
• Running informal lectures for medics and nurses about living with T1D
• Spread awareness through the "Healthy U" fairs ran in the university halls.
• Become affiliated and supported by Diabetes UK
This has all culminated in being awarded the runner-up prize for the UoN Volunteer Centre’s Project of the Year 2014.
In 2015 we want to do even more to raise awareness and support of T1D.
