Nottingham Mencap is an independent local charity dedicated to the service of adults and children with learning disabilties and autism in the nottinghamshire area.  We have day, weekend and evening clubs which provide an array of activities such as Drama, Art, Social Groups, Gardening and out and about activities and trips.

Gettaway Club Volunteer

Gettaway Club is a relaxed, fun group for adults with disabilities to socialise and meet new people. For the first hour, everyone plays a group game such as Family Fortunes, and for the second hour, there is a disco and karaoke. There are sometimes themed nights, and trips out to the panto. Volunteers are needed to get stuck in and help members of staff make sure everyone is having a great time!

Your role:

  • Assisting with running of activities (including setting up/clearing away).
  • Serving in the tuck shop and cash handling.
  • Supporting club members to participate in activities.
  • Attending and participating in volunteer meetings.

Days/Times Required:
6.45 – 9pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

  • Ability to use initiative

M8s Youth Club Volunteer

M8's is an exciting, vibrant youth club for young people with learning disabilities aged 5 to 18 years, giving them the opportunity to play games, socialise, learn new skills and go on day trips. Mencap want enthusiastic, willing volunteers to get involved and support members of staff deliver sessions.

Duties:

  • Supporting young people to participate in a range of activities including indoor and outdoor games, cookery, arts and crafts. 
  • The setting up and clearing away of equipment. 
  • Supporting on outings i.e. cinema, bowling and ensuring the safety and well-being of service users.

Days/Times Required:

1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, 10.30am-4.30pm.

Skills/Qualities Required:

  • Enthusiasm for working with children and young people with a learning disability
  • Empathy, patience, sense of humour
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Ability to use initiative

Gener8 Transitions Club Volunteer

Gener8 is a new transitions group for young people aed between 14-24 which runs on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. Gener8 works on the same principles as M8s but with a focus on developing life skills such as travel training, personal hygiene money skills, gardening, IT skills, in a fun way.

Duties:

  • Supporting young people to participate in a range of activities including indoor and outdoor games, cookery, arts and crafts. 
  • The setting up and clearing away of equipment. 
  • Supporting on outings i.e. cinema, bowling and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of service users.

Days/Times Required:

2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, 10.30am-4.30pm

  • Ability to work with people with a learning disability
  • Enthusiasm for working with teenagers and young adults
  • Empathy, patience, sense of humour
  • Ability to work in a team and use initiative

Volunteer Work Coach

Duties:

  • Supporting adults with learning disabilities and autism in a range of activities including indoor and outdoor games, cookery, drama, art and crafts.
  • Providing support to the relevant tutor or activity leader.
  • Assisting staff to set up and clear away equipment as necessary.

Dates/Times Required:

  • 9.00am to 12 noon or 12.45 to 3.15pm Mon to Fri. We can be flexible with hours and further discussion will take place at interview.

  • Ability to work with people with a learning disability and autism
  • Empathy, patience, sense of humour
  • Ability to work in a team and use initiative

Gettaway Club – Runs on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 7pm – 9pm. Volunteers are needed on one evening a week from 6:30pm to around 9:30pm.

M8s Club – Volunteers are needed on at least one Saturday a month from 10am – 4pm.

Gener8 - Volunteers are needed on at least one Saturday a month from 10am – 4pm

Volunteer Work Coach - At least one weekday morning or afternoon shift per week
