If you want to volunteer with elderly people then this role is for you!
The Helpful Bureau is a charity that runs activities for older people to socialise, learn new skills and make new friends to help reduce loneliness. They also provide DIY assistance to help them stay independent in their own homes.
About your role
You can help out with a variety of activities, including:
Lunch Club - Every Thursday The Helpful Bureau holds a lunch for elderly people. They want volunteers to help set up and serve the lunch. You can also get involved in any after lunch activities such as bingo or quizzes.
Silver Surfers (IT Skills) - Every Wednesday afternoon The Helpful Bureau has a Silver Surfers session where elderly people can learn how to use computers and the internet. You don't need to be amazing with computers, just able to use them. As a volunteer you'll be matched up with someone and you'll guide them through how to use it - you can also lead these sessions and create your own fun computer skill activities to help teach.
Reception and Administration – Welcome visitors to the Helpful bureau, help with post, updating computer records and maintaining noticeboards. They are looking for admin volunteers for the afternoons between 1-3pm.
Transport - if you have your own vehicle at University you can help elderly people go shopping. Often isolated elderly people and those with reduced mobility need help getting to the Supermarket/ shops, this is where volunteers with their own vehicles can drive them and help with the shopping. This role requires a DBS check but this will be free.
