What is Global Buddies?
Global Buddies is an informal peer-to-peer support scheme for international (EU and outside) students coming to the University of Nottingham UK campus for the first time. It offers an opportunity to have a friendly mentor who is a current UoN student as well as regular social opportunities to meet our welcoming and approachable volunteers and other students.
If you are an international student and you have any questions about life in the UK and Nottingham, about student life at the University of Nottingham and the opportunities it offers, this scheme is perfect for you. We will match you with an existing student who will contact you before you land in England and will offer a friendly face once you are here.
Benefits of joining Global Buddies:
* Information and answers to questions before arriving in Nottingham
* Help with settling in and having a familiar face
* Help with meeting new people and the opportunity to engage with social events and societies from the very beginning of your life at the University of Nottingham
* Providing sense of belonging to the Students’ Union, University and local community
If you would like to have a Global Buddy, please click on the link below and tell us a little bit about yourself. We will link you to your Buddy in early September time.
Applications for international students to be open soon.
Volunteer with us:
We are looking for friendly, reliable and enthusiastic volunteers to become Global Buddies - a point of contact for international students throughout their first semester at the University of Nottingham. Our volunteers support a small number of international students, for up to 4 hours a week, with a view to help them settle in, meet others and make the most of their University experience.
We provide interactive training, teaching you everything you need to know about being a Global Buddy. Great social skills and empathy towards issues that may affect international students are beneficial.
‘Volunteering in Global Buddies was a really fun and fruitful experience. An amazing chance to meet with other people who are willing to help and keen on meeting other people from different cultures. It is also a chance to do something helpful and enjoy the happiness of giving’
- GB volunteer, January 2018
