What is Union Refresh?
The fresh new look of your Students’ Union signals the start of a new Union experience for everyone; a Union shaped by you and your feedback.
We’ve run surveys, workshops, forums and listened to 1000's of students about what you love about your Students’ Union and what you feel needs to be better.
- We need to be clear about who we are and what we do
- We need to make our SU more inclusive
- And, we need to be proud and celebrate our successes.
From the signage around our campuses to the emails you receive, we want your Students’ Union brand to reflect you and your experiences.
It's not just about how we look though, #UnionRefresh covers other areas too. You will have already noticed changes in the Portland building, and there are many more improvements to come which you’ll find out about on these pages. Next year you will see a similar refresh in the services on offer and we plan to develop your experiences online and in the Union physical spaces too.

In 2013, following years of discussion, the Officer team wanted to show senior University staff that a good Students’ Union building would enable students to have a better time at University, and that it would benefit the campus overall.
The Activities Officer and the President at the time took the Vice-Chancellor and other senior managers from the University to see Leeds and Sheffield Students’ Union buildings in order to show them the potential for improvement in Nottingham. After continued discussion, it was then agreed by the University Executive Board that there would be a £15m investment into Portland to create a brilliant building for students.

Our new brand identity is just the start of the story. It’s the beginning of a new Students’ Union experience for all of us, shaped by you. You’ll already be seeing changes in the Portland building, but there are plenty more on the way, including how your Union looks and feels online. We’ll be reviewing the website so you’ll be involved in shaping what you need online.
Your experience is just as important as the way we look so we’re also going to be refreshing the way services are delivered and improving the customer service you receive.
We want to know where we are heading for the future and focus on the areas that are important to all of us. So, together we’ll create a strategy from 2018 to 2023 to make sure we can be one of the most successful Union’s in the country but more importantly giving each other the best student experience possible.
