Sutton Bonington Rugby Club SBRFC
One of the biggest and best societies on SB with both a mens and ladies team. Whilst we are a small club, we most certainly make up for it in character, where a challenging playing and bustling social environment put enjoyment at the heart of our club. SBRFC is a thriving and ambitious club right on your doorstep as an SB student, which is the ideal blend of competitive rugby and social down time from your studies as Vets or Bio-scientists.
That said though, we do field quality teams. The girls have only lost one game in the last two seasons, whilst the boys have won the top division of the Nottinghamshire club league for 3 years in a row now, as well as victory over a main campus side last year. The girls are a competitive team who love to work hard and improve, whereby all abilities are welcome into their rugby “famalam”, ranging from a large number of girls who have never played before, all the way to very experienced and seasoned players. Equally the boys are littered with players who have played a very high level of rugby, all in a team where commitment and challenge form the basis of enjoyment for all players in the club. Both teams train at least twice per week around fixtures, under the guidance of our young and ambitious coach, Sonny Thomas. The boys will be moving into the top flight of the Leicestershire club leagues for the 2019/2020 season and this will provide a new challenge as well as opening up more opportunities for exiting friendly fixtures.
SBRFC is also quality off the pitch, where there are regular socials for both teams throughout the year and our social secs do an excellent job at making them a good craic and inclusive. Socials are topped off by a tour every year for the boys and girls independently, where previous destinations include Dublin, Cardiff, Newcastle and there is ambition to maybe venture further in the future. Outside of formal socials though, SBRFC very quickly becomes like a family to you. There is nothing better than playing down at The Pitch of Dreams (The POD) with support from fellow club members and students, before then heading to our adopted rugby pub, The Coach House, to chill out. That said, the whole club does 7’s training in the late evening sun of the summer term before heading to a 7’s festival, which is pretty good too.
SBRFC doesn’t end when you graduate either with a strong old boys & girls network. We will certainly play an Old Boys XV every year before a big social, as well as probably seeing a number of them again on tour. This very much sums up the personal and inclusive rugby experience you will get at SB as well as quality rugby whilst being realistic with your studies.
