Welcome to the University of Nottingham Water Polo Club
The Water Polo Club is one of the friendliest clubs in the University and our Teams are very successful in BUCS! We cater for all types of players, ranging from national players right down to beginners who have never played before, so everyone’s welcome! Training is up to eight times a week, including coached Strength & Conditioning sessions, developing the core basics of the game as well as detailed match tactics and land based training.
If you’ve never played the game before, University is a brilliant way to get involved in a new sport without much pressure. So if you’re a keen swimmer, love team sports and are looking for something a bit different, give Water Polo a try. We promise you’ll have a good time, get fit and meet some amazing people along the way. We are hosting two taster sessions for anyone who's interested in trying or joining Water Polo. These take place in the David Ross Swimming Pool and are free of charge with all abilities welcome - it doesn't matter if you've never played before! Before you come to the taster sessions, you will be required to complete a basic swim competency test, which is required for all water sports at UoN. The test doesn't take longer than 5 minutes and you can turn up at any time within the swim test time slot to complete your test. See below for dates and times of these sessions.
Swim Competency Test - Thursday 26th September, turn up any time between 17:30 - 22:30 to complete your swim test.
Taster Sessions - Tuesday 1st October 21:00 - 22:30
- Thursday 3rd October 19:00 - 20:30
We are also part of the Engage programme, so we have regular sessions throughout the year which are free of charge if you have sports and fitness membership, or just a small charge if you don't. Visit www.nottingham.ac.uk/sport/engage for more information.
Membership fees for our club are £50 for the 19/20 academic year. This includes 7 pool training sessions, and 1 Strength & Conditioning session per week. It also includes regular matches throughout the year. Please note that UoN sports and fitness membership is also required to be part of our club. Early Bird membership is available until the 2nd of October and for £209 includes the following:
- Access to the new £40 million David Ross Sports Village
- Three fully-equipped fitness suites
- Over a hundred weekly group exercise classes
- 25m Pool
- Indoor sports halls and squash courts
Visit www.nottingham.ac.uk/sport/join for more details.
We have 4 competitive teams who compete in the following leagues and competitions:
Men's 1sts - BUCS Midlands 1A, BUCS Trophy, UPolo Midlands 1 (now defunct)
Women's 1sts - BUCS Midlands 1A, BUCS Trophy, UPolo Midlands 1 (now defunct)
Men's 2nds - BUCS Midlands 1A, BUCS Trophy, UPolo Midlands 2 (now defunct)
Women's 2nds - Bucs Midlands 1A, BUCS Trophy, UPolo Midlands 2 (now defunct)
All Teams also have regular friendly matches throughout the year, ensuring plenty of opportunity for everyone to play. The Men's and Women's 1st teams have had great success this year with the Men's 1st team winning the league and BUCS Trophy . As you can see UoN is at the top end of the sport but don’t let that put you off giving it a go, as squad rotation is applied for all other competitions and we have both Men's and Women's 2nd teams, and a new Men's 3rd team, meaning no matter what standard you're at, you’ll DEFINITELY get game time. This new Men's 3rd team is not in BUCS this year, making it a perfect squad for players who are totally new to water sports.
Pool Training is at the David Ross Swimming Pool at the following times:
Tuesday - 07:30-08:30 & 21:00-22:30
Wednesday - 13.00-15.30
Thursday - 19:00-20:30
Saturday - 16:00-18:00
Sunday - 16:00-17:00 & 21:00-22:30
As is important to any Sports club, Nottingham Water Polo offers a great social experience too, with socials every other week, with events from varied and fun sober socials to the best club and bar nights Nottingham has to offer. We go on two hugely popular tours throughout the year, one during the Easter break and the other at the end of August. We attend the annual Sports Ball every year as well as holding the annual Alumni Weekend just before Christmas, which sees club members past and present come together for some healthy competition, and to raise money for MIND, an incredibly successful charity very important to the club. Though we aren't the largest sports team in size, we are known throughout the University for our hugely successful socials, both as an individual club and with other water sports clubs. Our smaller size means that you will be made to feel instantly welcome and have some of the best times at Uni with some of the best people you can meet. GUARANTEED!
We also take part in the annual Nottingham Varsity Series against Nottingham Trent University which draws crowds of thousands to venues across Nottingham! Our recent Varsity events saw the Pool reach full capacity within 5 mins of doors opening, with spectators watching through windows to avoid missing the action. We finished comfortable winners and the event also included a spectacular half time show from the UoN Synchro Team.
We are looking forward to meeting you at the Welcome Fair, so come say hi, meet some of our team members and find out what the sport's all about. Any questions, don’t hesitate to message us on our Facebook page, twitter, instagram, or contact us directly via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
