Basketball (Mens)

Welcome to the University of Nottingham Men’s Basketball Club

We are one of the University's biggest and fastest-growing sports clubs, boasting over 100 members playing in one of the 6 competitive squads. The University of Nottingham Men’s Basketball Club (UoNBC) represents the university at various basketball competitions every year.

General Information

The Club consists of 3 squads competing in the BUCS leagues and cups, and 2 squads in the UoN Intra-Mural Sport (IMS) league. In addition this year we also have a brand new National League Team for our Elite Athletes to train and compete in.

Here are some highlights of our 2016-2017 campaign:

  • Top 20 ranked Basketball Club in BUCS
  • Quarter Finals of the BUCS Trophy Competition
  • Quarter Finals of BUCS Midland’s Conference Cup
  • Nominations for UoN Sporting Experience Award, UoN Team of the Year, and UoN Participation Club of the Year.

Not only do we represent the University in domestic competitions, members of UoNBC also get the opportunity to travel to China and Malaysia to participate in the University’s annual Tri-Campus Games. At home, the club's recent expansion into National League basketball has opened up exciting playing opportunities outside of regular BUCS competitions, and the coaching staff are committed to a three-pronged project of player development, trophy-winning, and maintaining academic success off-court. A number of former Nottingham players have gone on to play in domestic leagues and some have even taken up roles in the NBA office!

So if you’re an experienced basketball player looking to be part of Nottingham’s premier basketball team and participating in competitions against the toughest opponents around, UoNBC is the club to join!

However, our club also looks to nurture and develop players of all levels of ability.

With two squads in the IMS league (in both Divisions 1 and 2), some of our players have the opportunity to represent the club against other societies and clubs every weekend. The highly-competitive league has helped many of our players hone their skills and develop their abilities and move up into the BUCS squads. The high level of coaching and regular playing time make these squads a perfect place to improve and progress, and offer an opportunity to players otherwise busy with non-basketball commitments to play a role within the club.

Our Club also offers one of the University’s best-received Engage sessions, seeing many non-Club members from the student population participate in our weekly social basketball sessions. These sessions are free for students with sports membership and only £2 for non-members. Whether you’re experienced or just picking up basketball, these sessions welcome players to have a good time exercising while getting to know others! Also, equipment comes provided and there is absolutely no commitment to attend! So drop in when you feel like it and have a good time!

Varsity

One of the biggest highlights in the UoNBC calendar is the annual Varsity match against Nottingham Trent held at the Motorpoint Arena. This truly spectacular event in front of 5000 people is the largest university basketball event outside of the US and has to be seen to be believed. The fierce rivalry between the two Nottingham universities always brings out a spectacular show of support for both sides, and of course, more importantly, the chance to become a buzzer-beating hero like so many before you.

Events and Socials

Not only do we have an all-inclusive and high-performance program here at UoNBC, the Club has lots to offer off the court. To list a few, we’ve got a jam-packed social calendar for our members such as: joint socials with other clubs and societies such as netball and women’s basketball, Christmas dinner, post-exam barbeques, End-of-Year dinner, NBA Weekend get-togethers, 3on3 tournaments and even a paintball outing!

Welfare in Sport

As a club we have two members on the Welfare in Sport Committee, helping to raise awareness of mental health in Sport and improving the welfare services available to students at UoN.

As part of our commitment to Student Athlete Welfare and ensuring we are an open and inclusive club we have pledged the following:
