Who Are We?

The Nottingham Malaysian Society (NMS) is one of the largest and most established societies under the University of Nottingham’s Students’ Union with around 400 members. We aim to preserve a slice of the Malaysian experience for our fellow Malaysians and to introduce our diverse, vibrant culture to both the local and international students at the university. With events ranging from sporting competitions, parties, talks, games and food tastings, we strive to ensure the widest and richest variety of activities possible for our large membership – a little piece of Malaysia over 14,000 kilometres away from our Southeast Asian home.

History

Since its inception in 1985, we’ve grown to become one of the largest international student societies in the University of Nottingham, as well as one of the largest Malaysian societies in the United Kingdom.

Some notable Malaysians who have trekked across our iconic University Park campus include: His Majesty Sultan Tuanku Ja’afar, the fourth Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan; His Majesty Sultan Raja Azlan Shah, the 34th Sultan of Perak; Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, the wife of the current Sultan of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah; and Dato’ Seri Najib Razak, Malaysia’s the sixth and current Prime Minister.

30 years later, our flagship event – the Nottingham Malaysian Games – has become the de facto Malaysian event of the year in the UK, with the 30th Games attracting over 5000 people from over 70 universities. Many students make the trip to Nottingham as an all-in-one opportunity to catch up with old friends, enjoy a great day of sports and taste some food from home at our Malaysian Food Festival. Students come from as far as Ireland and Scotland, and come as early as the night before the Games for the event.

Why Join Us?

  1. Flexibility - Some societies have weekly events that clash with other societies - not us! We have events at various times of the week so we don't get in the way of other societies you may be interested in.
  2. Food - by far the best thing about Malaysia, according to Malaysians. If you've never sampled Malaysian food then come along - many of our events will give you a chance to try some!
  3. People and Culture - Malaysians are a social bunch. And with over 400 of them at the University, why not meet and make friends with some of them? We aim to welcome everyone, not just Malaysians.
  4. Get involved - with so many events across the year, you'll have plenty of chances to be a volunteer, or to help us organise many of our events!
  5. Variety - you won't find another society with so many different events. We've had Amazing Races, society day trips, movie screenings, careers talks, paintball trips, photography workshops, forums and speaker events, and of course our flagship events - the Malaysian Games, Food Festival and Malaysian Festival. See the 'Events' tab on the side for more information.
  6. Network - as one of many Malaysian societies in the UK, we have extensive networks and contacts with Malaysians across the country, and we regularly attend other events of Malaysian interests. These include various plays and performances by other societies, talks and forums and food festivals.
