The Creative Writing Society is a friendly community that welcomes anyone with a passion for writing. Whether you’ve been writing stories for years, decided yesterday that you want to write poetry, or simply enjoy listening to the fictions of fellow enthusiasts, you’ve come to the 'write' place!
For a mere £3 membership fee you'll have a plethora of events and opportunities at your disposal:
Wednesdays 7pm-9pm (First session 3 Oct)
Our main event and mid-week pick-me-up. Each week a new theme is explored through a range of activities and prompts. It’s a lot of fun! If you're feeling inspired, share your writing, or just sit back and enjoy the musings of others.
Thursdays 7pm-9pm (First session 4 Oct)
Got a character to create or a rhyme to refine? Are unwritten essays haunting your sleep? Come along to free writing to work on your projects in a friendly environment. Try bouncing some ideas around; who knows what inspiration you may find?
Saturdays 1pm-3pm (Fortnightly)
Portland Coffee Co. – The Snug
Be it the latest chapter of your epic novel, the pinnacle of your poetry collection, or a fun experimental piece, join us for some friendly critiquing over a good ol’ cake and cuppa. We have coffee discount, too!
The word ‘murder’ isn’t usually a selling point, but it's a key part of the biggest night of the Creative Writing year! Assume your new persona, meet and interrogate those of suspicious natures (everyone), and try to solve the case. Sure, you might die in the process,* but you won't let that put you off attending, right?
*Disclaimer: no-one is actually maimed or killed during this event. Unless you identify as a snack, in which case many of your people are devoured and we cannot guarantee your safety.
Podcast: Off the Page
A brand new edition to Creative Writing Society, Off the Page is a fantastic platform for members to share their writing with the world. If you have a piece to share but don't want to read yourself, that's fine too!
We have big plans for the magazine this year. Regularly published both in print and online, we hope to circulate our newly branded 'zine not only around campus, but in cafes and bookshops around the city. Showcasing the talent of our members, the magazine is the perfect starting point for getting your name and work out amongst the local communities and beyond (and who knows, maybe even a publisher or two!)
A new way to showcase your work online. The Blog is the best place to share the pieces you want to share with the world, be it a story you wrote in a Lit Circle or a poem you wrote on a train. Go to uncws.com for the blog and to find out more about the society.
We have many exciting collaboration events with other societies too! For the latest news and updates, join our Facebook Group or follow us on Twitter and Instagram
