What is ABACUS?

ABACUS is the Association of British and Chinese University Students at UoN and we aim to promote and celebrate like-minded individuals who are lost between cultures. Founded in 1994 at the University of Cambridge, ABACUS still holds the same traditions today: a space where British traditions and values fuse with Chinese culture. ABACUS has spread all around the UK, forming branches of this society in more than 14 universities countrywide, including Cambridge, Kings, Imperial and City University.

ABACUS is a society where students with Asian heritage can socialise and celebrate their cultural and social upbringing. ABACUS is a space where students of Chinese, Hong Kong, Taiwanese, Thai, Malay, Filipino etc. backgrounds can celebrate their culture and join a community of Asian students born or grown up in the UK.

Our rich and diverse membership is reflected in what we do during term time: we frequently hold socials - every other week during term time - ranging from weekly football and basketball sessions at Jubilee or David Ross sports centre, celebrating Chinese festivals, enjoying Nottingham’s finest Chinese cuisine, nights out as well as chilled games and movies nights!

If you are interested in celebrating Chinese and British culture and wanting to engage with Chinese traditions abroad, then ABACUS is the right society for you!
