Allotment Soc (SB)

About Us

The Allotment Society was established in 2011 thanks to funds donated generously by SB alumni /OKA and since then has grown in number of members, equipment and space!

We are a society of undergraduates, postgraduates and teaching staff here at Sutton Bonington Campus. We span a wide variety of courses but share the common interest of wanting to grow cheap and nutritious fruit and vegetables- fighting the stereotype of the typical university student. The allotment society provides a means in which students and staff can do this by providing small easy to maintain plots, tools and knowledge to its members.

Our Facilities

We currently have around 24 plots, a communal nature patch, a poly-tunnel and a couple of sheds housing everything you will need to manage your own parcel of land. Additionally, our greenhouse facilities enables our members to grow their own produce outside of the typical growing season.

We provide the space, tools, seeds and advice you need to grow your very own fruits, vegetables and other plants! Members have successfully grown a wide range of produce, which we try and display on our social media:

If there's anything we're lacking that you require, speak to a committee member and we can look into acquiring what you need!

Socials

Collaboration with other societies is a focus this year to show the campus the amazing work being out into the allotment and wonderful varieties of fruit and veg we grow: so far there are plans for collaborative socials with the Farmer's Markert Society and involvement with VetSoc's Welfare Week.

Because of the nature of allotment work being a "come along when you want", communication and socialisation between members has been lacking in previous years. This year we hope to change that, with some casual walks and meet ups in the local pub, and group planting events. The aim is to inspire and provide practical knowledge and skills for university and later life.

SB Ground Force

On Saturday 23rd March, Sutton Bonington Allotment Society rallied 40 students, staff and friends to help at Alexandra House care home in Nottingham. This came to be known as "SB Ground Force".

Over the course of 6 hours we cleared down an overgrown and un-used bank, covered the majority with membrane to prevent further weed growth and planted a selection of new plants. This bank was outside a lot of the bedrooms of the residents, and so all the hardwork will be greatly appreciated whenever they look out their windows.

The video below shows our progress throughout the day. We are hoping to return to Alexandra House to continue our work on this area, as well as other gardens on site.

Donations/ Sponsorships

The Allotment Society was established in 2011 thanks to funds donated generously by SB alumni /OKA.

We would also like to give a big thank you to Buy Fencing Direct (https://www.buyfencingdirect.co.uk/) for providing us with a free composter for our plot.

Thanks must go to Wickes in Nottingham for the donation of 3 spades, 3 forks, 2 hoes, 2 rakes and a watering can!

Do not hesitate to contact us with any queries. We look forward to seeing you soon!
