AEGIS

Aegis Students at the University of Nottingham are committed to campaigning, educating and fundraising to end genocide.

Throughout the year we aim to work together against genocide, and raise awareness regarding issues of genocide which still occur today. We seek to do this by encouraging a sociable atmosphere in which students can discuss current affairs and unite to defend human rights. There will be multiple socials throughout the year, as well as no-alcohol events. We are also excited to be hosting a number of guest speakers who themselves have survived genocide. There will also be a film series and a visit to the national Holocaust Centre.

As well as being able to get involved by attending talks, guest speaker events and socials, we run two core programmes throughout the year:

The Student Speaker Programme

Students are trained in public speaking skills and how to run a workshop on prejudice and genocide awareness. We then go into schools and deliver the workshop. This is a great opportunity for those interested in careers in education to gain some experience.

Student Campaigner Programme

Students are trained in key campaigning skills before we start our year long campaign. Last year we campaigned in support of the persecuted Rohingya Muslims of Burma, and next year we will start a new one. Student activism has a long history of being some of the most effective and we are eager to see students at the University of Nottingham stand up against injustice and inequality.

Working with the AEGIS trust, we aim to campaign against crimes against humanity and genocide.

This year in particular we aim to raise awareness of the genocides in Rwanda and Darfur as well as exploring the ongoing situation in Libya.

Throughout the year we'll be running campaigns, events and programmes in which everyone can get involved! We'll also have social events so you can get to know your fellow AEGIS members :)
