Democratic Review: join the conversation

Your Students’ Union has launched a Democratic Review to look into how we make decisions as an SU, how the representatives who make the decisions are held to account, and what your Officers’ roles are.

Why are we doing it? It’s simple. We want to make sure that our democratic processes are right for you, and that we’re representing you and your needs in the best possible way.

The first step is a survey, where you have the chance to tell us what you think of democracy in your SU. Want to take part? You’ve got until Friday 8 November to fill it in.

Then it’s time to get down to the finer details. Come along to our focus groups (taking place throughout November) to tell us more about what you think of our democratic processes, what you’d like to see more of and how we can make them work for you.

We hope you can take part – after all, your feedback will be essential when it comes to what happens next.

Want to know more about what our Democratic Review involves? Our FAQs have you covered:

What's going on?

We’re undergoing a dramatic democratic make-over throughout the next year. Times of change are always exciting, and we want to keep you in the loop with all the opportunities you have to take part.

Following a full review, your Students’ Union concluded that, in order to make sure that we’re delivering a fair and accountable democratic service to you – our members – we’d undertake a holistic review of our decision-making structures, representative roles and portfolios, and the accountability of those you elect to improve on what we offer.

Why are we doing this?

We want to make sure every part of your Students’ Union leaves you feeling valued, and really able to see the impact of your vote. A huge part of this is to make sure that you’re accurately and democratically represented by your SU Officers, and that you’re able to hold them accountable.

What do we hope to achieve?

Through audience research, we want to review how SU Officer roles are chosen, as well as exploring these roles and what they mean to you. We’re also looking to explore why we have student representatives, and why we choose to run through a democratic process versus using volunteers.

How can you get involved?

If you have an interest in taking part in this exciting shake-up, we’ll be starting out with a survey that will run from Thursday 17 October until Friday 8 November – and it’s open to all of you.

After the survey closes, we’ll be holding focus groups in November 2019, and further feedback sessions will follow up in January 2020.

What may be different?

Ultimately, we hope to bring about a new Students’ Union democratic structure based on all this research. This will take place through a student referendum in February 2020, with any confirmed changes being applied to our elections at the end of March 2020.
