How do you get involved?
How do you get involved in your SU? Let us know!

Tell us and you could win some great prizes!

How do you get involved in your Students' Union? The National Union of Students (NUS) are running a pilot survey this year on student participation.  They have selected 16 students’ unions to take part and we are one of them - we need you to share your thoughts with us!

For the next couple of weeks you will be able to access a survey online that asks you what you get up to outside of your classes and how involved you are with the various activities going on in your students’ union.  You’ll talk about employment, sports, social groups, volunteering, politics and loads of other things.  You’ll also get tell them what you think about your students’ union and how it could be improved.

The NUS are offering some incentives to students across all organisations taking part and to make sure that Nottingham students definitely get some goodies we’ll be running our own prize draw.

We’ll be going through the results with NUS over the summer.  As well as hearing what you like and want, we’ll also be able to see how students at Nottingham feel in comparison with the other unions taking part.

We think this is a really exciting project and we are looking forward to sharing the results with you later on in the year.

Wins for Students!

Your SU Exec have been working hard to create real changes for you.

Your Students' Union Executive have been working hard to create real change for students; have a look to see what they've been up to.

Students With Caring Responsibilities
The Students’ Union has successfully lobbied the University to collect data on students with caring responsibilities. This will improve the support for, and representation of, student parents and carers. Collecting data will allow us to review the relative dedication of resources and also enable both the University and Students’ Union to send targeted information to student carers on financial support and local childcare provision. The university experience of student carers will also be properly monitored which we hope will lead to many more positive changes!

C-card Scheme - extended to over 25s
After your Students’ Union raised the issue that C-card (free condom scheme) was unavailable to over 25s, the scheme has been extended to students over 25 years old! Students can register at the University of Nottingham Health Service (UoN HS-Cripps) and can then use their card at UoN HS and the Student Advice and Representation Centre in the Portland Building. A card will last for 2 years and operates in the same way as the c-card scheme, without the lengthy registration process, so students don’t need to make an appointment to sign up.

Exam Panic? Moving Out this Summer?
Exam Panic? Moving Out this Summer? SARC can help

Your Student Advice & Representation Centre can help you with a number of issues.

Summer is always a busy time, with exams and the prospect of moving house, as well as wondering what you are going to do for money over the long Summer break. Your Student Advice and Representation Centre have provided answers and useful advice to some of these issues:

Summer Vacation Benefits
Some students may be able to increase their income over the long summer vacation by claiming benefits such as jobseekers allowance, income support and housing benefit. Students who are long term sick or disabled, or those with dependent children may be entitled to these benefits. Please contact the Student Advice and Representation Centre for further information if you think you may be able to claim. You can also email them.

Time to move out!
We work with Unipol, a charity based at University Park, to ensure you have the best houses to choose from when it comes to house hunting time. They have also produced a  ‘Moving In Moving Out Special’, which provides a useful checklist and information to ensure that you are fully prepared for moving out. You can pick up one of these from the Student Advice and Representation Centre, B Floor, Portland Building, University Park.

Don't Panic!
Woken up on the morning of an exam and throwing up? Struggling with depression and your exams are round the corner? Facing bereavement and that piece of coursework is due in tomorrow? Don’t panic. If you think that your assessments are going to be affected by an unforeseen circumstance then you need to inform your school as soon as possible. You need to fill out an ‘extenuating circumstances’ form and submit it, with evidence of your situation, within seven working days of the assessment. For further help and advice you can email an education adviser.
