How do I get around Nottingham?

Nottingham is quite literally in the centre of everything! Not only is it well placed geographically (being in the middle of the country) but it is also a great place to go for entertainment, shopping or even historical visits.

Nottingham is home to 300,000 people and it's not surprising, the Department of Environment has declared it to have the "most vibrant" city centre in the UK. For the more active folk amongst you don't forget that we have the National Water Sports Centre, National Ice Arena and the Peak District National Park just a short drive away. In fact, Nottingham has more sporting facilities for its population size than anywhere else in Europe!

Transport to campus
Getting to and from the campus is easy - there are three main ways:

Taxi:
There are taxi ranks at the bus and train stations or from the centre of town. You can expect the taxi fare to be approximately £5-6.

Car:
Leave the M1 at junction 25 and follow signs for A52 Nottingham. Follow the A52 to the Priory roundabout (you will see a pub called the Priory on the left and a Shell garage on the right) where you should turn right. At the next roundabout turn left and enter the campus via the west entrance.

Bus:
Catch a red or purple bus if you want to get change. These services are run by Barton or Rainbow buses. To get to the north or west entrance catch the R4 or R5A. To get to the east, south or west entrance catch the R5, R5b or the Barton 18 or 32.

Nottingham City Transport buses do not give change! - they are either green or white and often have an orange stripe on the side. For the south entrance catch a number 13 from Friar Lane (next to Market Square). For the North entrance catch a number 35 again from Friar Lane. Alternatively catch a 33 or 34 from the Victoria bus station and they will pass through campus!

Can I register for healthcare while I'm studying in Nottingham?

The Department of Health strongly recommends that all students register with a local health centre whist at University.

The University of Nottingham Health Service is conveniently situated in Cripps Health Centre on the Main University Campus. The practice specialises in looking after students and staff at the University and their families. In the building there is also a dental practice, the University Occupational Health Unit and a pharmacy.

All first year students are invited to attend the registration sessions being held in the Great Hall and Senate Chamber in the Trent building during International and Registration weeks. Registration is arranged by times allocated to School / Departments.

To be eligible for registration with the University Health Centre you must:
- Be registered for a minimum of six months tuition on a University course
- Be resident within the area covered by the health centre. (for more details see the website, WWW.UNHS.CO.UK

Non EU students wishing to register must also provide a letter confirming the length of their course.

How do I register for my course?

What is registration?
To be considered a student of the University of Nottingham you are required to register with the University at the beginning of each academic session. Registration is the time when all the formal arrangements to undertake your course are made. You'll not only receive important information about your course and the possibilities for choosing other modules, but you can also find out about the computing services and even the possibility of getting connected to the internet from your own hall room.

Where do I register?
For first year students registration takes place in the Sport’s Hall. Registration documents and information are likely to be sent to your home address and you will be made aware by your department of the time and date that you need to register.

Finally...
registration is your chance to collect your University Card which is essential to take advantage of all those student deals. Don't forget to bring along your offer of acceptance, loan forms and anything else that you've been asked to bring.

During Week One it's likely that you will be registering for all sorts of other things too and it's amazing how many of them will need you to have a passport sized photo. If you want to stay ahead of the rest and free up some time for just chilling out then why not get some photos taken at home before Week One starts.

I have kids, can they come along to PGSA events?

Sure! Many of our PGSA events, like our Big Days Out, are family-friendly and we encourage you to bring your kids along.

The Students' Union also has a group specifically for students with dependents called "Students with Caring Responsibilities." Just visit http://www.su.nottingham.ac.uk/studentgroups/association/SWCR/ and sign-up for the mailing list to keep up-to-date with everything we have going on!

How do I join the PGSA?

Great news! If you're a student you're already a member! Every student who registers for a postgraduate course at the University of Nottingham is automatically a member of the PGSA and the Students' Union. This means you automatically get all the great benefits like access to sports teams and societies, our print shop and our Students' Union shops, restaurants and bars!

How do I get to my lectures if they're on another campus?

The university runs a free bus service known as the ‘Hopper Bus’ which runs from the main University campus to the Jubilee Business Campus all day. There are also free shuttle services which run from University Park Campus to St. Peter’s Court and to Sutton Bonnington. Getting around Nottingham is fairly easy as you’ll soon learn when you get here!

I'm disabled. Does that mean I can't participate in PGSA events?

No! If you contact us, your hall or let any PGSA rep know what kind of events you might like to attend, we can make the necessary arrangements to ensure that everybody gets an opportunity to be involved in PGSA activities.

What is the nightlife like in Nottingham?

Nottingham city benefits from having a diverse and exciting nightlife, there’s something here to suit every taste. Clubs range from big venues with massive capacity, to smaller, more intimate clubs which are great for acoustic live music. There is something here to suit every music taste, with nights ranging from pure cheese to drum n’ bass, breaks or techno.

The bar scene in Nottingham is unrivalled. A taxi driver once told us that you could start going out every night in central Nottingham from the start of freshers’ week and you wouldn’t have to go to the same bar twice until late December. That’s a lot of bars! We’re not suggesting that you try it, put it gives you an idea of Nottingham’s busy social scene.

If live music is more your thing Nottingham is home to the legendary Rock City-- a popular venue on many national tours. For larger gigs the Ice Arena is perfect, playing host to many bands and artists every year.

Whatelse is there besides a good night out?

Looking for something more than great nightlife? Nottingham’s also got plenty of great places to explore nearby – and most of them are family friendly! When the weather is nice Wollaton Park and the Nottingham Castle provide a picturesque backdrop for a walk or outdoor picnic. If you’re looking for something a little bit more adventurous check out Sherwood Forest, Rutland Waters or Belvoir Castle. You’ll need transportation to get there but they make great day trips. If you are after indoor entertainment check out the Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery in the City Centre- it’s free! Stop by Lee Rosy’s in Hockley for a cup of tea and a slice of cake to make an afternoon out of it! For a bit of culture catch a play at one of the several theatres in Nottingham like the Lakeside Arts Centre, The Royal Concert Hall or the Nottingham Playhouse. There are also several cinemas in Nottingham covering a wide variety of interests like Cineworld at the Corner House showing the latest blockbusters or the Broadway Cinema in Hockley showing independent and foreign films regularly. There’s also the independent Savoy Cinema on Derby Road which offers unbeatable student and family prices or the world’s smallest cinema, the Screen Room, which boasts just 21 seats!
