Where does Karnival’s money go?
Where does Karnival’s money go?

The money raised on ‘Rag Raids’ goes directly to the specific charity being collected for on that day. For example we are also the single largest contributor to the Royal British Legion’s, world-famous, Poppy Appeal.

The money raised by events is split between two areas: Kontact, described earlier, and the ‘Appeals Fund’. Every year, local organizations based in and around Nottingham apply to Karnival for a portion of our Appeals Fund. Recently projects include the refurbishment of the Breast Cancer Wing at City Hospital, The Lenton Community Project, The Play Centre for Disabled Children and many other local and national charities.

How does Kari raise money?
How does Kari raise money?

We raise money through regular events, one-off events, rag raids and fundraising adventures

.. with Regular events

  • Weekly club nights in Nottingham’s largest nightclubs with tickets invariably being sold in thousands.
  • Themed ‘Hall Parties’- organized by the reps. These include St Patrick’s Day, St George’s Day, End of Exams, Beginning of Term, Valentine’s Day, Summer Parties and many, many more.
  • Trips away to Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Newquay.

... with Large-scale, one-off events

  • The highly successful ‘Mr & Miss Nottingham’ contests, where the cream of Nottingham’s students compete on stage in the most exclusive venues in the city for the coveted titles.
  • 5 Go Dating- Promoted as one of the ‘most romantic nights of the year’, this speed dating with a twist takes place in Nottingham’s most exclusive bars.
  • 7 Legged – The largest event at the University of Nottingham and unofficially the largest bar crawl in the world involving 5,800 students and raising over £38,000 in one single evening.
  • Gub Polf – A golf themed night out where students don plus fours and flat caps in order to comply with the evenings strict bar etiquette.
  • Returners’ Week – Running alongside freshers’ week, a whole 7 days dedicated to entertaining second and third year students throughout the day and night culminating in the Refreshers’ Week party featuring a host of famous acts.
  • Snowflake Ball- The final event that marks the end of another year of Karnival and when the hall totals and the winners of Karnival are announced. Having a bigger budget than that of the Graduation Ball, tickets are highly sought after.

...with Rag Raids

By far the single greatest sources of income for Karnival are Rag Raids. Each and every week, buses with around 1000 Nottingham students travel to cities and sporting venues around the country to collect money on the street. These collections go to a wide variety of charities, large and small.

...with Fundraising Adventures (New Venture for 2009)

This year Karnival are expanding on the success of its Kilimanjaro Expedition in 2008, taking 62 people up the mountain raising £156,000.00 in the process. This year we are offering the following once in a lifetime opportunities:

  • Kilimanjaro 2009 – this year we will be re-running our hugely successful climb by running 7 trips over the summer, with a total of 270 climbers, raising an incredible £540,000.00 in the process and volunteering in some really worthwhile school construction projects.
  • Everest Base Camp – new this year, 60 students will be climbing 5360m to the iconic base camp that has seen the likes of Sir Edmund Hillary, Ranulph Fiennes and now Nottingham University, raising £120,000 to do so.
  • Three Peaks Challenge – why travel around the world to climb beautiful mountains when the stunning three peaks are on our doorstep.
