knit-a-soc gives students the opportunity to learn how to knit or build on a skill they already have. There will be workshops put in place to teach beginners how to knit. There will also be meetings which both beginners and non-beginners can meet up and knit together. (see posters below) Projects for knit-a-soc include knitting garments for the premature babies at the QMC, knitting blankets for elderly people and other charity fundraisers. There is also plenty of opportunity to volunteer for positions as knitting teacher for beginners and also running classes for the elderly in the wider community. Knitting isn't also a hobby to be enjoyed only by girls, boys surprise themselves, when they try their hand at knitting, how enjoyable it actually is. The first year, when knit-a-soc was run as a small club, we had quite a few male members, one week we even had a session which was 99% boys!! Here's photographic evidence to prove it!
And now that we are an official society we hope that we will redefine all genders beliefs about knitting and provide the opportunity for students to try something they never would have thought of doing! Needles will be available to members on a loan system, to enable beginner knitters to have a hassle-free introduction to knitting. However all members will be urged to buy their own needles. Wool used for charity knits will be paid for by the funds raised. If members decide to undertake personal knitting projects then they will have to provide their own wool.
