The University Association Fund Award 2010
The University Association, the association for graduates and former students of the University of Nottingham, has established The University Association Award to provide one-off grants for students undertaking activities that enrich their university experience.
To be eligible applicants must be registered students at the time of application, as defined in the University Statutes. Applications will be accepted from individuals or groups undertaking activities during the Easter or summer 2010 vacation periods. Consideration will be given to funding for activities which are not part of academic study, or a specific course requirement, and that in themselves do not have a natural source of funding from any other source.
Each year the fund will award up to £2,000. This will be split between as many appropriate projects as the awarding committee so decides. Grants given will only fund any given project up to a value of 50% of its total costs. On application, applicants will need to give evidence of how the remaining cost of the project will be funded. Those short-listed for the award will be asked to attend a short interview with the award panel.
Recipients of the awards must provide evidence of cost commitments for the project and a report of 500 words with photographs of the activities on completion. This may be reproduced in the alumni magazine, e-bulletins and web site.
Previous award winners include:
- a third year student awarded £950 to expand the Tanzania book project to other UK universities and within Tanzania; which has gone on to win best new charity of 2007 (www.readinternational.org.uk)
- a second year student awarded £850 to visit Halabja, Iraq to make a documentary and carry out some voluntary work with the women there
- New Theatre awarded £200 towards costs of productions at the Student Drama Festival, Scarborough
- a second year student awarded £500 to attended training in Malaysia prior to an international Taekwondo competition
- a first year student awarded £500 to study French language and culture at the Sorbonne, Paris
Applications should detail the activity in which you are involved and why you should be considered for the fund, e.g. to what extent will the activity in which you are participating enrich your experience at Nottingham? Please supply information on how you intend to fund the project, in particular with reference to how 50% of the funding will be made up.
Funds are awarded annually and the deadline for applications is 28 February 2010. The committee will make the decision in March and cheques will be awarded before the end of the Spring Term.
