Wing Chun Kung Fu

Wing Chun is a very unique and scientific form of martial arts. Wing Chun is a style of Kung Fu that originates from China and was later refined in Hong Kong. Wing Chun's specialty is in close contact combat, using quick punches and kicks with a tight defence, coordinated through agile stances and footwork for a quick advance. The effectiveness of Wing Chun is achieved by well coordinated attacks with simultaneous defence and vise versa. Due to its effectiveness this martial art makes for an effective form of self defence.

The style uses kicks, sweeps, palm strikes, punches, trapping and control techniques as part of its everyday fighting arsenal. It is one of the most popular and sought after martial arts in the world. Its techniques can be seen in many action films including Sherlock Holmes and Bangkok Dangerous. It is used by many famous martial artists, including, most famously, Bruce Lee.

Why Choose Wing Chun?

Wing Chun is probably the most popular form of southern China Kung Fu that is practiced throughout the world today.

Wing Chun theories are based around straight lines, simplicity and efficiency of movement and unlike other Martial arts there are not a lot of complex forms or katas to learn. The hand and foot techniques as well as the strikes within the Wing Chun system are very effective, easy to learn and very easy to use.

A major part of Wing Chun is relaxation. In order to fight more efficiently, and with far more speed, you need to be relaxed. Wing Chun is renowned for its fast hand speed and striking techniques, as well as its ability to turn defence into counter and attack within a few seconds. Wing Chun will enable the user to overcome any opponent regardless of their strength or size.

That's not to say it is just for those new to martial arts. Those with belts in other disciplines will also learn new things, as Wing Chun is a great addition to anyone's knowledge of martial arts and self-defence.

Nottingham Wing Chun

Nottingham Wing Chun is taught in an informal atmosphere in the East Concourse in the Portland Building. The instructors and senior members have all been practicing Wing Chun and other martial arts for years and will know the best ways for you to be taught in order to progress and improve your technique and prowess in self-defence and martial arts. Most have also been Nottingham University students, so they know what life as a student is like. If you miss a session, it's no problem.

We like to engage in the social side  of University as well. Unlike alot of martial arts clubs, where you'll turn up twice a week, hit some people for two hours and then leave, at Nottingham Wing Chun we'll encourage members to come to the pub with us after sessions. We'll also be organising a load of social events such as pizza nights, all you can eat dinners or nights out in the city.

There is no Gym membership needed to join, so that saves you a nice £200!

Equipment

When you join there will be no need for any specific equipment. There is also no need for any specialised clothing or garments like Gi's. As you progress further into the use of Wing Chun, gloves, gumsheilds, shin guards and groin guards may be neccessary, but can be purchased from the committee and the club at low prices.

There are club T-shirts, hoodies and trousers that can be bought from the committee, which include the club's logo and look great as a way to show off your new martial art.

Joining Wing Chun

If you like what you've seen here, and want to join the club to get some experience of the most popular form of martial art in the world, then all you have to do is come along during Fresher's Fayre (20th-23rd September, fields by the Sports Centre) and speak to us on the stall to get your barcode, or join up online by registering and adding our club to your basket.

As said, there is no gym membership in order to join or come to the classes.

Membership is £1 for the entire year.

Then all you need to do is head on down to one of our classes during the week (there are two for beginners) on Tuesdays or Thursdays at 7.00PM in the East Concourse Lounge.

Questions?

If you have had a look, but don't quite know about a certain aspect of the martial art, or have any general questions regarding the club, our members, classes, equipment or anything like that, don't hesitate to email Alex Hamilton (email address at the top of the page) or any member of the Committee, and we will do our best to answer your questions.
