WHY BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, created by the Gracie family in Brazil and popularised by the UFC is a ground fighting based martial art, working on the premise that the majority of fights in real life will most likely end up on the ground, where conventional punches and kicks count for very little. As a result, knowledge of how to fight whilst on the gorund becomes paramount in order to provide a complete self-defence program.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the only martial art to provide an effective solution to address the question of what to do on the ground, teaching you how to escape, defend and subdue an opponent when strikes are no longer effective. It is also the only martial art that includes real 100% sparring in a controlled environment in order to prove the effectiveness of its techniques against an opponent giving 100% resistance.
When applied correctly, little strength is required and opponents several times your body size can be defeated. This martial art is particular important for women's self-defence, providing answers to many situations that commonly arise in many of the dangerous areas around Nottingham.
This martial art is also fantastic for improving overall fitness and health, providing effective cardiovascular work outs if attended regularly. Because of the nature of the art, every single muscle is used with variations in speed and strength, providing a non-discriminate work out for the whole body. If you've not done this before, a 5 minute sparring session will feel like a 20 minute sprint!
OUR ASSOCIATION

We are associated with Gracie Barra, the official UK based organisation for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu straight from its origins in Brazil, which provides access to seminars from many of the top black belts, such as Victor Estima. We are also open to compete in several gi (the traditional uniform worn by Jiu-jitsu fighters) and no-gi competitions throughout the year in the UK.
Training is conducted in an informal manner, consisting of warm up drills and stretches, techniques teaching and practice, followed by 30 minutes of live sparring, alternating between training partners every 5 minutes.
Typical training gear consists of fight shorts and a rashguard or the traditional kimono gi, which can be purchased at a discount price from our suppliers at Blitz sport. There is no obligation to wear any of these items as an old T-shirt, shorts or jogging bottoms are more than ok to train in. The majority of people are more than happy to shop around and buy their own gear to suit their brand and design tastes.
