OpSoc

The University of Nottingham Opera Society

"Joining OpSoc is the best thing I've ever done."
Sam Patchick, OpSoc Summer Ball 2011.

Welcome to OpSoc!

What is OpSoc?

OpSoc is the Opera Society within the University of Nottingham, established since April 2009. Our third year as a society is set to be full of exciting events, continuing our fantastic productions, brilliant social events and excellent opportunities for all singers!

What productions are we going to do?

We are extremely excited to be performing a brand new opera, composed for us by Nottingham based composer, Alex Patterson!

In March we have planned a night of 20th Century Opera, sampling the opera of composers such as Holst and Barber. Finally in June, we have our summer performance of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. There will be many brilliant chances for singers of all levels to get involved and we certainly hope that you’ll enjoy the different events we have to offer this year!

What else will OpSoc be doing?

Along with our weekly group rehearsals, we will be organising singing workshops welcoming all abilities! We will also be organising trips to the opera in Nottingham, having been to see Bizet’s Carmen, Weinberg’s The Portrait, and Lehár’s The Merry Widowperformed by Opera North in Nottingham last year.

For the past two years we have had members involved in the Nottingham Marrow Run and we encourage our members to take part in this worthy cause. There will also of course be many more of our great socials, which are always brilliant and certainly nights to remember!

Who can join?

You can join! Whether you’re a solo singer, love being in choruses, enjoy acting, play an instrument or just simply enjoy opera! We welcome everyone and there are always plenty of opportunities to get involved.

Why Join?

Opera is an art which has survived the ages and we aim to nurture it and bring it to the students of Nottingham University.

OpSoc has already opened the gates to new horizons for many people over its short time as a society!

Our rehearsals and workshops are brilliant fun and many strong friendships have been formed. Some of our members and directors have carried on their musical careers at colleges such as The Royal Academy Of Music and Birmingham Conservatoire. Membership is £5 and lasts a year- the question is, why not join?
