Living History

Welcome to the Nottingham University Living History Society's website.

We are a Norman re-enactment group based around the period of 1066-1250. Re-enactment is where you learn about the history of the Normans, and also learn how people lived, crafted and did battle at the time. You then use that knowledge to show and educate members of the public for special events such as training weekends and the re-enactment of particular battles like Tintagel or the battle of Hastings.

Whether leatherworking, sewing, cooking or fighting we teach members authentic methods in a friendly environment. For just £4 for an entire year you can come along and enjoy our weekly sessions (battle-practice and kit making on Wednesdays) and of course our pub quiz socials on Thursdays.

As a relatively small group, we often join up with a larger local Norman group to go to shows.

Our aim at shows is to demonstrate the lifestyle and hobbies of various ranks, from peasant to knight. Maybe you’ve wondered how medicine was performed, tents made, games played or how much a lazy guardsmen could get away with? The (sometimes highly amusing) answers to these questions and more can be found out in the Living History Society.
