Come, good Sirs and Madams, come step through the looking glass with us...
Welcome to the Creative Writing Society, where anything goes - as long as it is on paper. We offer you the chance to perfect your skills as a writer, socialise with fellow nut-cases and even get published! The Society arranges weekly Lit Circles (every Thursday) where you can try your hand at different writing activities. The theme changes every week and they include fairy tales, dreams, poetry, fiction, history, favourite books, films, theatre and even dinosaurs! Look out for a few special sessions - our ever-popular Murder Mystery dinner, our Day in Hogwarts (in collaboration with Quidditch & HP Soc) and our Hunger Games (with the Book Club).
We also hold monthly Open Mic Nights where you can relax while listening to fellow writers read out their work and maybe even read out one of your own. Last term, we took part in the charity open mic night Original Noise, in collaboration with Song Writing Soc, Poetry & Spoken Word Soc, and Band Soc, successfully raising £60 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. This term, we sold Wishing On A Star, a collection of twelve original fairy tales to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, successfully raising a total of £250! Collaborations with other societies in the past have included script-writing (with Film Making Soc) and special Lit Circles (with Quidditch & HP Soc, and Book Club).
We offer guest lecture events every semester with a confirmed Theatre and Writing Workshop with the Target Theatre Company planned for May. We also keep you updated about competitions and workshops in Nottingham and around the country. This includes helping members with major writing contests and initiatives like National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) by holding extra writing and brainstorming sessions, a meeting we have kept going beyond the NaNoWriMo in November.
Our pride and joy is "Jabberwocky", the univesity's very own creative writing magazine. Whether it is a piece from the Lit Circle or something you wrote in your own time, we are happy to help you get it published and circulated around the campus. Stocks for our first issue of this year are already nearly over!
