Start a New Society

Starting a New Sports Club or Society

Can’t find a sports club or society that caters to your interests? Why not start your own, all you need is a great idea and 25 other students at the University of Nottingham who are willing to support you in setting up the group.

Follow the steps listed to begin the process of setting up your group:

Step 1

You first need to complete the Aims & Objectives and have them approved by the Activities Officer/AU Officer.  Guidance on writing your constituion can be downloaded below

Writing Your Constitution

You will need to think through what your aims & objectives as a group are going to be.  Onece you have done this, please book an appointment with either the Acivities or Athletic Union Officers to discuss your idea

E-mail angela.lee@nottingham.ac.uk to arrange a meeting

Step 2

You will need to complete some paperwork as follows:

Constitution: This details how your group will work and run and what your aims & objectives will be

Committee List: You will need a President, Treasurer (not a final year student) and a Secretary as a minimum who will run your group

Membership List: You have to sign up at least 25 people who will be interested in joining your group if it is affiliated

Membership fees: All groups need to set a membership fee.  The cost of the membership should reflect the activities you will offer as a group.  The recommended price is between £3 & £5, a minimum of £1 must be charged

Membership fees must be collected from potential members and presented by cash or cheque (made payable to UofNSU) with the rest of the paperwork

If your affiliation is sucessful, your members details will be added to your membership list on the SU Website and all monies paid into a Private account set up for your group in the SU Treasury.  If your affiliation is unsuccessful all monies will be returned to you.

STARS Bronze Paperwork

All clubs and societies are required to complete Bronze paperwork, this msut be completed before your society goes to council.  It also shows us that you are a viable group to run and that you have thought through the risks and safety issues associated with your activitye.

Complete Bronze Paperwork

To help complete paperwork please read the Clubs & Societies Handbook

Step 3

Societies Council is the governing body of Societies and consists of the Activities Officer, Societies Exec and the President (or a representative) of every Society.

The Societies Exec Chair will read out the Aims & Objectives of your Society and give Council the recommendation from Societies Exec.

Council members will have the opportunity to ask the proposed Society President questions regarding the Society.

The Society shall be approved and, therefore, affiliated at Societies Council with a simple majority, with the Activities Officer having a casting vote

Step 4

Your group is considered for affiliation at Athletic Union or Societies Council Councils are the governing body for Sports Clubs and Societies and are made up of the President of each existing Club or Society.

They will ultimately decide democratically whether or not you can become an affiliated group.

You need to provide a one minute speech which will be read out at the council about why your group should be affiliated.

Council members will then have the opportunity to ask any questions to you about your proposed group and then they will vote. You need a simple majority to be affiliated, in the case of a tie the Activities or Athletic Union Officer will have the casting vote. And that’s it!

Good luck with starting your society!

You will be informed via e-mail if your affiliation has been successful, if you are the President or Treasurer of your society you must attend a Bronze Training session to complete the affiliation process.
