Medics Karnival

Medics Karnival

Karnival is the largest student-run charity organisation in the UK, hosting events mainly for Freshers (that's you!), raising money for many, many charities.

In 2009, Karni managed to raise a staggering £1,256,000 , and the medic Karni team raised £131,900 alone - coming in 2nd place out of all the Karni teams. We need you guys this year to help us come first! We will be in charge of your first term, making it as enjoyable and as memorable to the best of our abilities.

From balls to bar crawls, rag raids and sky dives, youre sure to find something to get involved with!

Medics Karni started much later than most Karni teams when it was decided, due to the amount time medics often are made to spend with other medics in lectures and labs and whatever else, that we deserved our own Karni team.

Since then we've never failed to come less than 4th and in 2005 we won the Karni Cup!! The Medics Karni '09 team achieved the highest medic total ever raising a mind blowing £131,900 in the space of a year! But- this is all done against the odds. We don't have a hall or an easy place to gather people or a JCR to give us support. We at Medics Karni really have to fight to do well- and we always do!

It's all about the charity...

Karni is, at the end of the day, all about charity - so you're actually being a really good person by going out (which is what you will tell your parents). Every time you buy a ticket or come on one of our events charities that really need the money get a cut!

An example of a charity we're involved in is Ameca: set up by the mother of an ex- Nottingham medic, it helps to provide medical care in Africa. There are also Kontact events, where Karni gives local children from underprivileged schools chances to go on school trips. The med school also has many of it's own big charities too which we can help you get involved with and raise money for!

And of course, if you have a charity you would specifically like to raise money for, we will do everything we can to help you organise your own events.

..BUT it's also about FRESHERS

We're so excited about meeting you all! Remember that we've just finished our first year, so if you need anything at all you can ask us as weve just lived through it all!

You're in for the best years of your lives and we're very jealous about what you have ahead of you. Make sure you join the Freshers Facebook page: Official Nottingham MedicsFreshers 2010. See you all very soon!!

FRESHER'S GROUP '10- CLICK HERE!

Oceana Mondays

The University of Nottingham's OFFICIAL Monday night spot. It's big, it's a bit more classy than the other big nights and you're guaranteed to see a lot of people you know there. We sell ticket's for this every week outside LT1 for £4. Make sure you get one and don't miss out!

7-legged

It's a few weeks into term, you're settled in and you've got at least 6 friends. Time to dial up the crazy, tie yourselves together, don incredible fancy dress and take part in the world's biggest bar crawl!! Everything you need will be provided by your Karni reps closer to the time. Watch this space!

Mr & Miss Medics... then Mr&Miss Nottingham!

Think Miss Congeniality, minus the beauty... and a LOT messier. We pit the best of our boys and girls against each other to crown our Mr&Miss Medic who will then go on to compete with the Mr&Miss winners from the other Karni teams. This can only result in one thing- a night to remember. Or forget if you we're competing...

Snowflake Ball

The glitz and glamour of the amazing Snowflake Ball signifies the end of your fresher’s term. Bigger and better than even the graduation ball, this is where the winners of the Karni Cup are announced, and is definitely not to be missed!

Following the ball we head into town and carry on the night. The last night with your reps before they hand over to 6 newbies. Emotions will be running high. Bring tissues.

Fresher's Ball

One of the medical school's newer traditions. The week after WeekOne circumstance calls for a more sophisticated start to Medic life. Meet your reps, meet your fellow medics and have a jolly good time in the process. Ticket's will be on sale before you arrive and details will be in Bedpans and Dipsticks. WARNING! This always sells out fast so be prompt with buying tickets. Last year it sold out in 4 days!

Bedpush

The ultimate medic event. Pushing beds through a city in scrubs collecting money for charity followed by the legendary Bedpush Bedcrawl. It's what you were born to do!! Note: This year we cannot guarantee there will be beds but we'll have a wickked time with scrubs, fake blood and bandages nevertheless... sad times

So... what is a rag raid?

Some universities may consider Saturdays as a day to mooch around and recover from a Friday night, but here at Nottingham, things go down a little differently: we're talking about rag raids!

Every Saturday for your first term we will venture to various cities around the UK (we're talking Cardiff, Edinburgh etc), give you a collecting tin and set you on your way around town in fancy dress. After a day of collecting money for charity, you guys will be rewarded for your good deed, and theres no better reward than a never-ending bin of Karni cocktail (a lethal blend that is deceptively stong!). With prizes, punishments, boat races and scuba diving (you'll understand), these bus journeys back to Nottingham are not to be missed. Did we mention that it'll only set you back £4 for all this?

On return to our beloved campus, we will hit the Students Union to continue well into the night. Seriously, rag raids are epic, do not miss out! They are a fantastic way to get to know the people in your year, and we can safely say that we wouldnt know half the people we do now if it wasn't for rag raids. At least once a year the older years come along to our 'returners rag raid'. This is pretty infamous and you can guarantee comedy as we square up to our 'Karni parents' with the most hilarious punishments yet!

Note: Even if you don't want to drink but want to come and collect it's still a great day and the journey home is still fun with a non-alcoholic version of everyones favourite cocktail avaiable when requested!

The standard rag raiding day!
  • 7am-8am: Wake up and shake off the Ocean hangover. Get readt for an epic day.
  • Bus journey: Sleep... you'll need your energy for the way home!
  • 11am-1pm: Arrive in city. Start collecting
  • 4pm-6pm: Stop collecting. Get some dinner.
  • Journey home: Fun, games and Karni Cocktail!
  • 9pm-10pm: Arrive back in Nottingham and hit the Den
  • 1am: Leave the Den and crawl back to halls!! Wickkkeddd.

Challenge yourself

Ever wanted to go to Africa and go on a Safari or go to China and visit the Great Wall? Why not take on a Karni fundraising challenge. The main challenges on offer are climbing Kilimanjaro (the highest peak in Africa!), trekking to Everest base camp or trekking 200km along the Great Wall of China. Best thing is that won't cost you half as much as it would if you did it independtly and a large chunk (at least 70%) of the money you raise goes directly to the charity!! All you have to do is raise £2200. I know it sounds like a lot but that's the equivalent of 2 bag packs with 5 family members or friends topped up by a few donations. EASY!!

Get in touch with one of your reps to find out how to get involved!

But it doesn't have to be that crazy!!

There are loads more fundraising challenges that don't require to raise as much money and are a lot easier to complete. There is the London to Paris bike ride, absailing down the QMC and skydives galore- all available to do in fresher's year and all with much smaller fundraising targets!

Let us know...

Let us know if you've done any fundraising during the last calendar year! If you can get us a letter from the chrity stating how much you raised and how then it all counts towards are Karni total and can make a massive difference between us winning or losing the Karni cup!

Could you be next?

The day after the Snowflake ball the old reps announce who is to take over them and each rep gives their 'child' one of their shirts.

It is always competitive and unfortunately only 6 people can be chosen. It's tough- but that's just the way it is!

Applications usual open in late November and forms will be made available both here and from your reps!

Our Family

Medics Karni is also a family. We all get on and we have alumni meals and generally hang out alot even once our days of wearing red are gone!

We're always there to help out the next years reps and lots of us go on to other things like MedSoc or Karni Exec (you'll notice a few familiar faces in the MedSoc Committee that also appear in our family tree!).
