About the Union
The Students’ Union plays a vital role during your time at University, by making sure you have the best student and academic experience possible. We do this by representing you on the issues that matter to you, helping you gain the skills to achieve your dream job and making sure you have the most incredible time with a huge range of events, clubs and societies.
We gained charitable status in 2010 and have over 32,000 members (that’s you, the students!), and act as the recognised representative body of all students at the University.
We provide a comprehensive advice service to help students with academic, legal, financial and personal problems; we finance Societies, the Athletic Union, a magazine, a theatre company, a TV station and a radio station; and we have over 3,000 volunteers in community projects. We also run 3 Shops, a Bar and a Print Shop. Recently we’ve established CAtCH (Campaign to Change), a new peer to peer campaigning group which sees student volunteers running campaigns on the issues that matter to you.
Nine Student Executive Officers, who are elected by you every year, represent you and improve the support, guidance and opportunities provided by your Students’ Union.
As a charitable organisation we have a Board of Trustees to oversee key decision making for current and future success of the Students’ Union. Four of the Student Executive Officers are Trustees, taking responsibility for managing the Students' Union.
We employ over two hundred staff with around half of our staff being students who balance work with their studies and social lives.
